Time to take action and help protect our community
There are many community campaigns that that you can add your name to and help us. It might be signing a petition, writing a letter or sending an email, or perhaps coming to a meeting. Our current campaigns are below. If there is a local campaign you think we should be involved with, click here and let us know.
Help us save St Helier Hospital
Due to a lack of funding, the government will review the proposals to build 40 new hospitals, including a new hospital in Belmont.
Please join our campaign to ask the government to provide the money to upgrade and repair St. Helier hospital and maintain services on the existing site after years of neglect and lack of repairs under Tory governments.
While we fully support the hard work of doctors, nurses and staff in St Helier, we believe the building is not fit for purpose and that local residents deserve better.
Step free access at Colliers Wood Station
For many public transport users, accessibility makes the difference between going out or staying in.
Step-free access isn’t just about improved accessibility for wheelchair users, but also for those with limited mobility, people with pushchairs or those carrying heavy luggage. Step-free access is vital to ensuring all residents are able to travel safely, comfortably and with dignity.
Colliers Wood Tube Station is a vital transport link helping to take residents from nearby wards in Wandle, Abbey, Colliers Wood and Lavender Fields to and from Merton to central London and beyond. It is also part of the longest stretch of the tube on the Northen Line currently without step-free access.
That’s why your Merton Labour Action Team have initiated a petition to show the strength of support in making our local tube station step-free.
Together, we must act quickly to make our case to Transport for London (TfL) and urge them to approve work at Colliers Wood so the station is accessible and inclusive to all. We know TfL are prioritising the nearby Tooting Broadway station, but with your support, we can get TfL to prioritise this vital station for residents.
Help us save the shops on Grand Drive
The owners of the flats on Grand Drive by the roundabout have applied for permission to add 2 floors and 3 lift shafts to the buildings.
This means more homes for Lower Morden, which is great. However, the developers also want to remove the shops which provide vital services for local people. There are 8 shops serving this area, with 2 already having to shut down.
The 6 shops want to remain at their current site and we also want them to stay there because we believe if you take the shops away you take away the community too.
Councillor Sally Kenny and Councillor Stephen Alambritis are leading a campaign calling for these shops to be kept as part of any planning permission granted. If you agree, please sign the below petition.
Show your support for Lillie’s Law
In 2021 our community was rocked by the tragic death of 21-year-old Lillie Clack, who was fatally injured on Christmas Day by a drunk driver, who was allowed to continue driving for over a year following her death.
Since then, Lillie’s mum Debbie and auntie Donna have campaigned tirelessly for a law change. “Lillie’s Law” calls for driving licenses to be confiscated on the spot for those found to have caused an accident under the influence of drink or drugs until at least the completion of any court case. Over 40,000 people signed a petition launched by Debbie calling for Lillie’s Law to be implemented.
As a result of the petition, Siobhain took Debbie and Donna to meet Lilian Greenwood, the Minister for Road Safety, to discuss Lillie’s Law. The Minister is supportive and will include the proposal in her department’s upcoming road safety review.
If you would like to lend your support to Debbie and Donna, please send Siobhain a message using the button below.
